JOB TITLE: School Counselor
REPORTS TO: School Director
CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the School Site Director, the School Counselor will be responsible for providing support and direction to learners to help them reach their social, academic, emotional and physical potential. The School Counselor will be responsible for guidance counseling including transition planning and preparing learners for post-secondary success.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Counsel with learners to help them better understand themselves and others. Assist them in overcoming personal, social and academic obstacles.
  • Provide crisis intervention, information and referral to appropriate agencies.
  • Counsel learners regarding future occupational and/or educational opportunities appropriate to the student’s level of ability and interest.
  • Monitor learner’s progress toward graduation/promotion and help high school students prepare four-year educational plans consistent with their goals (when applicable).
  • Assist in identifying special needs of learners and collaborate with other specialized personnel on behalf of the learner.
  • Utilize assessment data, school records and learner interviews to better support learners’ academic success.
  • Assist with large group testing programs. Evaluate and interpret results of tests.
  • Help learners gain an awareness of interests and abilities.
  • Facilitate learners’ understanding of test construction and help learners and families interpret educational test data.
  • Establish guidance programs at the school level that provide learner preparation for post-middle school.
  • Evaluate on a continuous basis the guidance programs being delivered and make or suggest needed modifications.
  • Help learners become aware of all phases of post-middle school options.
  • Maintain learner records regarding post-middle school plans.
  • Collaborate with the school and local community in scholarship fundraising efforts.
  • Facilitate family workshops and assistance in the processing of learners forms and applications for financial aid.
  • Maintain professional competence through participation in professional development activities provided by the school and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Host informative webinars and/or workshops as needed.
  • Leads Suicide Risk Reviews and Threat Appraisals in collaboration with other trained CHSC professionals per DPS and CHSC policies
  • Participates in Special Education (SPED) assessments and Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) Meetings in conjunction with School Professionals
  • Provides IEP mental health minutes for student receiving SPED support
  • Participates in 504 evaluations and implementation meetings
  • Valid Colorado Department of Education School Social Work License or School Psychology
  • Experience writing IEPs and managing a caseload that includes creating goals, monitoring progress, collaborating with case managers and determining service minutes
  • Masters in Counseling, or Psychology, or Social Work
  • Provide crisis counseling on an as-needed basis.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide ongoing support and actively collaborate with the Student Support Team to ensure that the mission, vision, values and philosophy is clearly understood and carried out.
  • Represent the Organization in a positive and professional manner in all interactions and communications.
  • Follow and actively participate in development of all guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Maintain professional competence through participation in professional development activities and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Perform other responsibilities as defined by the School Leadership team.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Communicating with others to exchange information. (In Person/Telephone/Computer)
  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
  • Adjusting or moving objects up to 30 pounds in all directions.
  • Vehicle operation for transportation purposes between worksites (if applicable).
  • Assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned.
  • May encounter outdoor elements (high (>90)/low (<60) temperatures, precipitation and/or wind.
  • Ability to work in situations involving the need to make informed and quick decisions.
  • Ability to supervise/manage workers and delegate as needed in project management situations.
  • Reading detailed documentation and analyzing data sets.
  • Writing professionally both by hand and utilizing computer software.
  • Speak in public settings both in person and in virtual settings.
  • Build relationships with organizations and professionals in the community and establish partnerships for student growth.
  • Be entrepreneurial & willing to wear multiple hats to get the job done right.
  • Dealing and navigating professionally through high-stress situations.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Psychology or a related field required.
  • Masters Degree in Psychology/Counseling is required.
  • Colorado Special License for School Psychologists is required, a Certified License for School Psychologists is preferred.
  • Work well with children and communicate effectively.
  • Exercise tact, patience, kindness and positive attitude.
  • Must possess and maintain a standard of moral character and behavior to serve as an effective role model for learners.
  • Ability to problem solve and multi-task.
  • Ability to cooperate successfully as a member of a team.
