Colorado SKIES Academy embraces the whole child, focusing on both social-emotional and academic skills. At the start of each school year, in lieu of the traditional parent/teacher conference, learners and their facilitators, in collaboration with parents/guardians, create an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) that includes individual goals (academically aligned to state standards and social/emotional goals). Everyone works together to reflect on, monitor, and make adjustments to the ILP as needed.
The primary goal of the ILP is to ensure that each child reflects on their own achievements and identifies areas in which they need to improve. Therefore, each learner will be working toward attainable goals aligned to their individual development. Each learner then has an opportunity to reflect upon and evaluate their progress toward those outcomes, starting at a basic level when they are younger and improving their ability to self‐assess over time.
In September, learners will meet with their facilitator/squadron commander and their parent/guardian to review assessments and set goals. Throughout the year, they will meet to look critically at what they have accomplished, review assessment data, and examine a portfolio that showcases what they have learned throughout the school year.
