It has been an adventurous and fun-filled week at Colorado SKIES. Learners, facilitators, and staff members have been busy enjoying project-based learning, designing, creating, and problem-solving. This week’s featured learning opportunity was the Drone Soccer demonstration at Wings Over the Rockies Exploration of Flight Training Center. Fox News 31 from Denver covered the event; click here to view the video! Drone Soccer is a relatively new sport, where drones fly in a cage, maneuvering paths to either score a goal or keep the opponent from scoring. CSA learners partnered with a retired pilot to learn navigation, robotics, design, and constructing drones, and so much more.
Colorado SKIES Academy 7th and 8th graders experimented with chemical reactions, a rocket design, and ingestion-crafted rockets made from plastic water bottles. Rockets zoomed down the sidewalk powered by a recipe of baking soda and vinegar. Each learner experimented and tested the projection of the rocket to determine the ratio of vinegar (acetic acid) to baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) that would produce the best blastoff. There were a lot of failed launch attempts, about which learners would discuss what happened and how they could tweak their rockets to have them go farther.
Learner-Led Conferences
Thank you, CSA families, for joining us for Learner-Led Conferences (LLCs) last week. Our learners demonstrated poise and shared their growth and learning in the areas of assessment and Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs). Please share your feedback about your experience at the LLCs. Colorado SKIES learners, get ready for an exciting day on Friday, April 30. All CSA learners will be enjoying a guided tour of the DC-3 plane at Wings Over the Rockies. The Douglas DC-3 is known as the plane that changed the world because it revolutionized commercial passenger flight — first developed as a sizable 14-bed sleeper during World War II.
Thank You
Finally, we want to thank you, CSA families, for providing donations and meals during our Learner-Led Conferences. The CSA staff and facilitators felt loved and appreciated.
