Katherine Cheung: First Female Asian American Pilot

January 29, 2025 is the start of the Lunar and Chinese New Year Celebration. So this week’s Grit and Lace focus is on Katherine Sui Fun Cheung.

She was born in 1904 in China and as a teenager, her family sent her to study music at several California institutions of higher education, including the University of Southern California. She completed three years of study before marrying her father’s business partner, George Young. They then started a family.

Next, in 1931, she took her first airplane ride with her cousin. She loved the freedom she experienced in the sky. Immediately, she began flight lessons with the Chinese Aeronautical Association in Los Angeles. She soloed after only a few hours of instruction. She was a natural flyer.
