Nicholas Long is a science facilitator at Colorado SKIES Academy. He began his teaching career in Houston, home of NASA, and for the last five years has been an educator in Houston, Texas, and Denver, Colorado. We’re fortunate to have him at Colorado SKIES!
What is it about Colorado SKIES Academy that attracted you to pursue working at CSA?
At Colorado SKIES, I’m excited to introduce science curriculum in a new way that is tied to the fields of aviation and aerospace. My goal is to create projects that foster more curiosity about our lives, the world we live in, and the future that lies ahead of us.
My background: For the last five years I’ve been an educator in underprivileged areas of Houston, Texas and Denver, Colorado. I began teaching science and social studies in Houston, Texas. As Houston is the home of NASA, I was able to highly engage learners when it came to the science curriculum. I truly gained a vast appreciation for science education through witnessing my learners’ ongoing excitement, engagement, and curiosity. I then moved to Colorado in the summer of 2016 to begin teaching history and geography in the Green Valley Ranch/Montbello area of Denver. After wanting a change of scenery, I found Colorado SKIES this last summer and was hooked by the vision that the program has to offer.
My education: Bachelor’s in Human Sciences, Elementary Education, from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. GO BIG RED!
What would learners be surprised to know about you?
I’m very excited to educate young minds through a project-based approach that will allow them to question, test, research, and engage in hands-on learning that leads to greater scientific understanding.
