Black History Month: Bessie Coleman

At Colorado Skies Academy, where the spirit of aviation and exploration takes flight, we celebrate pioneers who have broken barriers in aerospace. This Black History Month, we honor Bessie Coleman (1892-1926), the first African American and Native American woman to earn a pilot’s license.

At a time when racial and gender discrimination prevented her from attending flight school in the U.S., Coleman refused to give up on her dream. She traveled to France, where she earned her pilot’s license in 1921, becoming a trailblazer in aviation history. Known for her daring stunts, she used her platform to inspire others and advocate for equal opportunities in aviation.

Bessie Coleman’s courage and determination continue to inspire learners, proving that with perseverance and passion, the sky is not the limit-it is just the beginning!
