Starting on Monday, March 23, learners will be online with each of their facilitators. Based on the Governor’s directive, online classes will continue through the end of the school year.
Please stop by the CSA Main Office (Modular B – Room B2) to pick up a sanitized Chromebook. The Main Office will be open at these times:
- Monday, March 23: 7:15am – 10:00am
- Tuesday, March 24: 12:00 noon – 3:00pm
Option 1: During the times noted above, we will also have paper copies of the week’s assignments available for pick up. For those families who will be using this method, the facilitator will be notified to (1) mail paper versions of the assignments home and (2) call the learner so he/she can be a part of the online session via phone.
Option 2: In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Comcast is offering 2 months of free internet service to low-income customers. Please contact Comcast for more details.
There will be 4 hours of instruction, from 9:00am to 1:00pm, Monday through Friday. Each class session is 35 minutes long with a 5 minute “transition period” between sessions. There will be an hour-long break from 1:00 – 2:00pm. Learners can access the “office hours” from 2:00 – 3:00pm of any facilitator, SPED Case manager, or Care Team member for additional help, questions, and assistance. Please note, four hours of online instruction is considered a full contact day. So, CSA students will remain on-track and will not miss any instructional time per Colorado Department of Education requirements.
To streamline instruction, all learners will be in the same class session based on content and facilitator. For example, all 6th grade English Language Arts (ELA) learners will be in one session with Mrs. Keys because she teaches both 6th grade ELA classes.
My son/daughter has a class session with Ms. Motley, but I don’t see her class listed anywhere on the schedule. When will he/she meet with Ms. Motley?
Ms. Motley will be present in the same online classroom sessions she attends normally. She will be there for the same “in-class” support she always is there to provide. For those learners who have an outside class with Ms. Motley, they will attend her “Office Hours” between 2:00 – 3:00pm for additional instruction and contact hours. Ms. Motley will be in touch with each of these learners (and families) to identify the amount of time each learner needs to be present during her Office Hour time.
CSA facilitators will utilize a video conferencing program called Zoom. At the scheduled time, learners will use the URL link and sign on to the class session. Their facilitator will be there and start the session. The URL link will be sent to learners via their CSA Google Calendar, be posted on the facilitator’s Google Classroom site, and will be on the class schedule.
Please note: Only learners who are in that class session will be able to access the online session. Each session is accessible only to the proper learners.
Each class session will begin with a 5-10 minute “mini-lesson” where a new concept is introduced or expanded upon, instructions provided, and perhaps a short discussion with online participants. There will be some online work time and then, at the end of the session, the learner will submit an exit ticket or reflection on Google classroom at the end of the session. Time will be allotted for students to submit the exit ticket or reflection.
Learners make contact with each of their facilitators via Zoom class sessions, completing an exit ticket/closing question for attendance, turning in assignments on Google Classroom, or showing up during Office Hours. All of these activities demonstrate a learner’s engagement in the online learning platform. A learner’s engagement in each class will be reported to our Office Manager/Registrar every Friday. She will mark attendance for each learner for the week in that specific class. If a learner has not demonstrated any engagement in a class, the parent/guardian will receive a phone call from CSA Staff to ascertain that the learner is safe and well. Please note that PowerSchool attendance will only be updated once a week while we are in an online learning environment.
Transitioning to an online learning environment has gone well, but it is still very different for learners and facilitators. Thus, grading needs to be approached differently for CSA learners. For 4th Quarter (March 13 – May 29), grades given at the end of 3rd quarter will either remain the same or improve as your learner progresses through the online project learning. Feedback will be offered to learners as appropriate. At no time, will grades be negatively impacted. The goal is for CSA learners to grow in their learning, develop and grow as individuals, and expand their capabilities as brought on through an online learning environment.
All of the class sessions will be recorded and then uploaded to Google classroom. For any session that is missed, the learner will view the recording and then submit the exit ticket or reflection at that time. Once submitted, the attendance will be updated to “Excused” by the facilitator.
Normally, a learner is provided two days for every day absent to make up missing assignments. However, holding all classes online is new for all of us. In some cases, more time than these two days may be needed. So, we ask that learners make up missing assignments as soon as they reasonably can. We will work with each individual learner on a case-by-case basis, ensuring everyone has adequate time to make up any missing class sessions and assignments.
During this time of online learning, the focus will be on core academics and Exploratory. We will commence with electives and advisory once we return to our normal onsite location and schedule.
