With a target date of May 2022, Team Seagrass will be sending seagrass to the International Space Station as a part of the DreamUp to Space Mission 2021-22. Teya B., 5th grade, is one of the two PI’s, also known as principal investigators, for this project.
Teya is eleven years old and part of iLEAD Exploration at SCVi, iLEAD’s founding school. Math and science are Teya’s favorite subjects; she loves the way they are puzzles to figure out and understand. She enjoys art — painting, sculpting, crafting, or sketching! Gymnastics is another one of her hobbies and she takes intermediate gymnastics at LA Valley College. Much of Teya’s spare time is spent playing with her twin, Caydin. Caydin and Teya often cook together, or play card games, board games, and brain games. Teya swims regularly in her grandparents’ pool. Almost every night before Teya goes to sleep, she listens to a book or reads.
In what ways has the DreamUp to Space experience influenced or inspired you?
Although I have not been in this project a long time, I have been inspired to learn and research the things that interest me.
What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity that you have with DreamUp?
There are many exciting opportunities that DreamUp presents. I find the most exciting one of all is the fact that young kids like me are learning and then sending something to the ISS.
What superpower would you want and why?
If I could have any superpower I would choose to have the power to move atoms, that way I could move my own atoms to fly, heal, and do most other things.
What’s a fun fact that you learned while being in the DreamUp To Space project?
I have learned many fun facts about space and seagrass; such as the fact that seagrass is dispersing at the rate of two football fields an hour, and that it took more than 30 missions and ten years to build the ISS.

Emilina W., 13, is a seventh-grader with iLEAD Exploration at SCVi, iLEAD’s founding school. Emilina enjoys reading, drawing, watching television, and reading. Her favorite book is “The Enchantment of Ravens” by Margaret Rogerson — she loves the characters, setting, plot, and the entirely different world the author created. Emilina is also fond of animals, especially the maned wolf (if you haven’t seen one of these, we encourage you to look it up!). We got the chance to ask Emilina a few questions…
In what ways has the DreamUp to Space Launch Team experience influenced or inspired you?
It has inspired me to be more outgoing and be more enthusiastic towards my goals.
Who do you look up to and why?
One of the people I look up to is my older brother, Marcus, because he always has a positive attitude towards things and looks for the next thing he can do, whether it be a project or something he can do to improve.
